Fortnite: #1 Victory Royale

For our first game review, lets start off with the “infamous” game Fortnite. Stepping away from the dances and memes born from this third-person shooter, the game as a lot of lore that it has built over the years. Playing Fortnite is a lot of fun when with friends. If played alone, it’s more silent and tensed, mainly because as a single player, you would rather play Solos then with Randoms. Sometimes they just aren’t that reliable.

Overview of the game

Fornite is a free to play game that has different gameplays inside the game, one of the most popular ones is the free for all, with Solo, Duos, Trios, and Squads. The basis of this gameplay is to eliminate all the other players and be the last one standing, or in other words, get that #1 Victory Royale. The game is pretty accessible since it is available on phones, tablets, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One S and X, and PC. Below is a map of the Chapter 3 19.10 Patch.

Praise

One of the aspects that I love and have mentioned it earlier, is the ability to play with friends. Fortnite goes above and beyond on this and has the ability for cross-compatibility. With being able to play with a friend that has the game on PC and others that have the game on switch, I was able to have fun, even while we were sometimes not winning. One of these moments was when we were near the Condo Canyon area, out where the actual canyons are. We were trying to head to the circle before the storm hit and one of my friends managed to find a car, but then went to hit the another teammate who proceeded to fly away “to Vietnam”. The other stubbornly denied it all. Everyone else thought it was hilarious.

Playing multiplayer games can bring a lot of joy since the player and their friends can be the MVP’s of the round or fail miserably but still goof off. Even with all the shenanigans going on, the game proved to be challenging enough to make my gang put up a good fight, but still engaging that we played for hours, swapping some people in so everyone gets to have some fun. The others spectated from Discord.

In terms of Balance, Fortnite is consistent given that as the player levels up, they get introduced to other players that are at their new skill level. Fortnite gives positive feedback to the players each time they level up, with stars that they can claim and use in the shop/battle pass. Lastly, the game is fun since there is always something new to do in the game, with all of its different gameplays, options and regular updates.

Issues

With the new addition of Klombos to the game, it as proven to be an issue when dealing with enemy players. If we are in the line of sight of a Klombo and a enemy player shoots at them, instead of the other getting attacked, it is the player in front of the Klombos instead since that’s what the Klombo sees. This has proven to be frustrating to play with, since people would just aim for a creature that can not die to deal with other players. It’s a cheap shot in simplest terms.

Another issue that is pretty minimal is when teammates have poor internet connection. This hinders the gameplay since one player might have the best internet while another one is lagging since someone else is using the microwave at the same time (true story). Even if everyone has good internet connection, there was still the issue of proper communication. On Switch, which is what most of my friends and I use to play the game, we had a hard time figuring out how to talk in-game, but managed to use Discord voice-chat instead.

Strategy/Improvements

The only improvements that I can give to the game is to have more backpack space for ammo. I mean, having a weapon being able to have around 500 ammo is cool, but what if I wanted more? Jokes aside, I would appreciate that the inventory would be slightly bigger to include more items, but it makes sense that it has a limit. With the limit, it makes the players think about their arsenal and what is of the most importance in survival. Maybe have improvements in the in-game voice for Switch? That would help out immensely.

The Execution is overall nice. Fornite has a set objective, with it being to be the overall winner of the round/game. Get to the circle, take down enemy players, reign supreme over all.

Conclusion/Encouragement

With Fornite being free, cross-compatible, and having multiplayer availability, it makes sense that it is still a popular game to play with friends. Even if you don’t happen to have friends, you can still hone your skills with Solo. You can still goof off though. Be the gremlin you are, just be courteous.
